How to Install Camlock Fittings on Suction & Delivery Hoses

Camlock fittings are widely used with suction and delivery hoses for water, chemicals, wastewater, and general fluid transfer. Installing them correctly is essential to ensure a secure, leak-free, and reliable connection. Follow this simple guide for best results.

1. Gather the Right Tools & Components

Before you begin, make sure you have:

  • The correct camlock fitting (male/female, type A–F as required)
  • Suction or delivery hose cut to length
  • Suitable clamps
  • A sharp hose cutter
  • Screwdriver, spanner, or banding tool (depending on clamp type)

2. Prepare the Hose End

A proper hose end is essential for a secure seal.

  • Cut the hose cleanly and square using a hose cutter
  • Remove any loose debris, sharp edges, or fraying
  • For reinforced suction hose, check that the internal helix isn’t deformed - trim carefully if needed
  • Slide your clamp onto the hose before fitting the camlock tail

3. Fit the Camlock Tailpiece

  • Push the hose fully onto the camlock hose tail until it sits firmly against the shoulder
  • This may require a twisting motion for heavily reinforced hose
  • Ensure the hose is seated evenly all around the tail - this is critical for sealing

4. Secure Using the Correct Clamps

Choose a clamp suitable for the hose type:

  • For Standard Delivery Hose
    • Use a worm-drive hose clamp
    • Position it just behind the final barb ridge and tighten evenly
  • For Suction & Wire-Reinforced Hose
    • Use heavy-duty bolt clamps or a steel banding system for a stronger hold
    • Tighten gradually and evenly to avoid pinching or distorting the hose
    • Double-clamping may be needed for large-diameter suction hose

5. Connect and Lock the Camlock

  • Attach the matching camlock coupler/adaptor
  • Close both cam arms fully - there should be a firm, positive snap
  • Check that the gasket is correctly seated and not pinched

6. Pressure-Test Your Assembly

Before putting the hose into full service:

  • Run water or air through the assembly at low pressure
  • Check for leaks around the clamp and camlock interface
  • Tighten clamps further if small leaks appear, or refit if necessary

7. Ongoing Maintenance Tips

  • Inspect clamps regularly, especially on suction lines that see vibration
  • Replace worn gaskets immediately - camlock seals are inexpensive and essential
  • Store hoses coiled, dry, and out of direct sunlight to extend service life
