Screwdrivers & Hex Keys

Screwdrivers and hex keys are essential fastening tools found in every installer’s toolkit, designed for driving, loosening, and tightening screws, bolts, and fasteners across a wide range of applications.

Screwdrivers come in various tip types—such as flathead, Phillips, and Pozidriv—each suited to specific screw designs. Ergonomic handles and hardened steel shafts provide durability and torque control for electrical, mechanical, and plumbing installations.

Hex keys, also known as Allen keys, are L-shaped tools used for hexagonal socket screws commonly found in pipe clamps, valves, machinery, and flat-pack assemblies. Available as loose keys, T-handles, or folding sets, they offer compact precision for tight or recessed fittings.

Together, these tools ensure secure, reliable fastening and efficient maintenance on site or in workshop environments.

Types Of Screw Drivers

Flathead (Slotted) Screwdriver:

  • Straight blade for single-groove screws
  • Common in basic joinery, electrical plates, and general fittings

Phillips Screwdriver:

  • Cross-shaped tip designed for self-centering Phillips screws
  • Widely used in construction, appliances, and electronics

Pozidriv Screwdriver:

  • Similar to Phillips but with extra ribs for greater torque and reduced cam-out
  • Common in European fixtures and electrical fittings

Torx (Star) Screwdriver:

  • Six-pointed star tip for high-torque applications
  • Found in automotive, machinery, and electronics

Precision Screwdrivers:

  • Small-scale screwdrivers for fine work, such as electronics or terminal blocks

Insulated VDE Screwdrivers:

  • Rated for electrical safety up to 1,000V
  • Used by electricians for live circuit work

Stubby Screwdrivers:

  • Short-handled for use in confined or restricted spaces

Ratcheting Screwdrivers:

  • Allow continuous turning without repositioning hand
  • Ideal for repetitive work

Types Of Hex Keys

Standard L-Shaped Hex Keys:

  • Basic hex key for socket head screws
  • Available in metric and imperial sizes

Ball-End Hex Keys:

  • Rounded tip allows angled entry—ideal for hard-to-reach fasteners

T-Handle Hex Keys:

  • Provide extra torque and comfort for larger fasteners or prolonged use

Folding Hex Key Sets:

  • Compact design with multiple sizes in a single handle
  • Great for portability

Long Arm Hex Keys:

  • Offer increased reach and leverage for deeper or tighter socket access

Colour-Coded or Size-Marked Hex Keys:

  • Aid fast identification and selection on site

What Is A VDE Screwdriver?

A VDE screwdriver is a specially insulated screwdriver designed for safe use on live electrical circuits up to 1,000 volts AC. The "VDE" certification comes from Verband der Elektrotechnik, a German association that tests tools for electrical safety according to strict European standards.

Key Features of VDE Screwdrivers:

  • Individually tested to 10,000V for guaranteed safety at 1,000V AC
  • Insulated handle and shaft to protect against electric shock
  • Ergonomic grips for comfort and control during precision electrical work
  • Clearly marked with the VDE and IEC 60900 compliance logos

Common Uses:

  • Installing or maintaining electrical systems
  • Working on consumer units, terminals, sockets, and control panels
  • Live fault finding where power isolation isn't possible or practical
