Plumbing & Drainage Keys

Plumbing and drainage keys are essential hand tools used to operate, adjust, or access valves, covers, and fittings within water and drainage systems. These robust tools provide the leverage needed to engage fixtures that are recessed, rusted, or otherwise difficult to access.

Commonly used on stop taps, drain covers, and radiator valves, plumbing keys help installers and maintenance teams perform critical functions such as isolating flow, removing inspection covers, or servicing heating components.

Different Types

Stop Tap Key:

  • Long-handled tool for operating underground or recessed stop valves
  • Often telescopic or T-handled for extra leverage

Manhole Cover Key:

  • Used to lift and remove drain and inspection chamber covers
  • Available in various head types to match cover slot designs (e.g. T-bar, double hook)

Radiator Bleed Key:

  • Small square-headed key for opening radiator bleed valves
  • Essential for venting trapped air from heating systems

Multi-Utility Key (4-Way / X-Key):

  • Designed to operate multiple utility boxes, valve cabinets, or access covers
  • Includes square, triangle, and slotted heads

How To Use Drainage Keys

Identify the Cover Type:

  • Check the cover for keyholes, slots, or lifting points.
  • Select a drainage key that matches the shape and size of the keyhole (e.g. T-bar, double-hook).

Insert the Keys:

  • Insert one key into each lifting point or slot—usually two keys are used simultaneously.
  • Ensure the keys are seated securely and fully before attempting to lift.

Apply Controlled Pressure:

  • Grip both keys firmly and lift using a straight, controlled motion.
  • Avoid jerking or twisting to prevent damaging the cover or key.

Remove the Cover Safely:

  • Once the cover is loosened, lift it clear and place it flat on a secure surface.
  • If the cover is heavy or stuck, use a pry bar or a mechanical lifter if necessary.

Refit the Cover After Work:

  • After inspection or maintenance, reposition the cover carefully.
  • Ensure it is flush and secure to prevent trip hazards or water ingress.
