Bottle gullies are an essential part of a below-ground drainage system. They act as a connection point for waste and rainwater pipes, while preventing foul odours and gases from escaping into the atmosphere. A bottle gully is a type of drainage trap that performs three important functions:

1. Collecting Waste and Surface Water – accepts water from rainwater downpipes, kitchen waste, or utility appliances.
2. Preventing Odour Escape – the internal water trap blocks foul gases from the sewer system.
3. Protecting the Drainage System – captures debris, preventing blockages further down the pipe run.

• Wastewater or rainwater flows into the gully chamber.
• Inside, a water trap (similar to the U-bend in domestic plumbing) forms a seal that prevents odours and gases from rising back up.
• Solid debris is retained in the gully, which can be removed by lifting the grate or access cover for cleaning.
• Treated water exits through the outlet, connecting to the 110mm or 160mm PVCu underground drainage system.
