How to Install Fittings on an Air Hose
Select the right hose and fitting
Confirm the hose inner diameter (ID) and wall thickness meets your compressed-air system’s pressure rating, flow requirements and compatibility with the media (air)
Choose a fitting type that matches your hose: e.g., for flexible air hose you may use a barbed tail with clamp
Ensure the fitting material and thread standard match your system (BSP, NPT, etc.) and working environment (vibration, temperature, cleanliness)
Prepare the hose end
Cut the hose to length using a sharp hose cutter to ensure a clean, square cut. Avoid angled or jagged ends which may lead to leaks
For braided hose you may need to trim stray fibres and ensure the inner tube is not damaged
If the hose will be clamped over a barbed fitting, slide the hose clamp onto the hose before inserting the fitting
Insert or attach the fitting
Barbed / Clamp Fitting: Push the hose firmly onto the barbed tail until seated, then slide the clamp into position just behind the barb ridges. Tighten the clamp securely - but avoid over-tightening so as not to damage the hose
Threaded Fitting: If the fitting screws into a port or hose end, apply the correct sealant or tape (if required per manufacturer), then tighten to the correct torque
Pressurise and test for leaks
Gradually bring the system up to working pressure
Apply a soapy-water solution around the newly installed fitting and joint; look for bubbles indicating leaks
If a leak is detected, depressurise the system, rectify by loosening and reseating the fitting then retest
