Fernco Unisaddle (DN300-450)

Useful Information

What is a Unisaddle Used For?

The Fernco (previously known as Flexseal) Unisaddle, is a specialised fitting designed for connecting lateral pipes into larger concrete or clay pipelines. It is particularly useful for creating new junctions in existing drainage systems without the need for extensive excavation and disruption, such as connecting lateral pipes from new buildings or road gullies into the main sewer or surface water systems.

Key Features

  • Versatile Application: Can be used on concrete and clay sewer or surface water pipes ranging from DN300 to DN450.
  • Simplified Installation: Requires only minimal excavation to the top section of the main pipeline, making it less labour-intensive than traditional junction methods.
  • WRc Approval: Recognized by UK Water Authorities, ensuring compliance with stringent quality and performance standards.
  • Deflection Acceptance: Accommodates a deflection of up to 7° on the lateral pipe, offering flexibility in installation.
  • Shear Support: Incorporates shear support to withstand substantial shear loads, enhancing durability and reliability.

Specifications

  • Size Range for Main Pipe: DN300-450.
  • Material: Composed of EPDM, ABS plastic, and 1.4301 (304) Stainless Steel.
  • Lateral Pipe Size: 160mm PVC, with deflection up to 7°.
  • Pressure and Vacuum Ratings: Rated for 1 bar / 14.50 psi pressure and a vacuum of -0.25 (-0.3) bar.
  • Load and Deformation: Supports a vertical load of 20Kn (approx 2 tonnes) and tolerates up to 5% deformation.
  • Jetting Resistance: Resistant to jetting pressures up to 180 bar.
  • Temperature Range: Suitable for continuous use in temperatures from -50°C to 80°C, and intermittent use up to 100°C.
  • Tightening Torque: Recommended torque of 6Nm.
  • Standards Compliance: Meets BS EN 681-1, BS EN 295-3, BS EN 295-4, BS EN 10088-2, WIS 4-35-01.

How and Where to Install a Unisaddle

Installation of the Fernco Unisaddle involves the following steps:

  1. Core Drilling: Diamond core a 172mm hole at the selected position into the main pipe, ensuring the area is clean.
  2. Shim Configuration: Use the appropriate number of shims based on the wall thickness of the main pipe.
  3. Saddle Positioning: Align the contours of the saddle with the main pipe and ensure the arrows on the rubber body and plastic sleeve line up.
  4. Locking Sleeve Installation: Insert and lock the sleeve into the bore of the saddle, using a wooden block and hammer if necessary.
  5. Lateral Pipe Insertion: Insert the lateral pipe (and Fernco Multibush if required) into the fitted saddle and tighten the clamp band to the recommended torque.
